firefox nightly in a portable format

want to use firefox nightly in a portable apps format on windows?
grab the latest version of firefox portable from here and install to the location of your choice (usb key etc).
get the latest version of the nightly build here (scroll to the bottom and download the appropriate zip…not the exe) and extract it to a temp directory somewhere (not on the usb key). once you’ve extracted it go into the firefox directory (it may be in sub-directory depending on how you extracted the archive) hit ctrl-a to select all the files. do a ctrl-c to copy them and then head over to where you installed firefox portable. now for the firefox directory, which should be in firefoxportable\app\. click into it. delete all the files that are in there then do a ctrl-v to paste all the nightly files, in.
that should be it. start firefox portable in the usual way (FirefoxPortable\FirefoxPortable.exe) and you should be running the new version you chose.
be warned that some of your extensions will no doubt be broken.

and please note that in my defence i have to use windows at work, rather than linux, so i run firefox portable within a truecrypt container through a vpn tunnel. so there.

dropbox on linux with symbolic links

decided to try out siphon for firefox to sync my add-ons between computers. all’s working well but after a wee tip from @rantz i decided to extend things a wee bit using dropbox. he suggested using it to share greasemonkey scripts.but i thought i’d like to try it with my gimp install which i use both at work and home.

by default dropbox creates your share folder within your home directory (/home/user/Dropbox) but i have a few directories out-with this folder that i’d like to sync. aforementioned gimp settings folder for example.

to do this some simple symbolic links are used… for the gimp cd into the dropbox directory and issue

ln –s /home/user/.gimp-2.6 /home/user/Dropbox/gimp

repeat this with any folder or file you like. fancy trying dropbox? you get 2 gigabytes of storage free…and if you use this link and i get a wee bit of extra storage too ;)

you can check out other browsers results or test your own.

i only have three installed at the moment on ubuntu 10.04 alpha 2 and my paltry results can be seen in this screenshot…

TACO firefox plugin/add-on

there’s a new plugin for firefox called TACO (Targeted Advertising Cookie Opt-Out).

it allows you to opt-out of 27 37 separate behavioral ad networks including google, youtube etc.

the plugin’s available here (but you’ll need to be signed up to the mozilla development network not any more you don’t) or here as a direct download from the author’s site.
