blackcurrant and lemonade…with ice and bokeh
wanted to run the kindle app on my notebook (ubuntu 11.04 64 bit) but strangely amazon don’t offer a linux version of their software despite the kindle being based on linux and them offering an android version. the solution? the latest wine beta.
to install the latest wine beta on 11.04 fire up synaptic package manager and select ‘settings’ and then ‘repositories’. click the ‘other software’ tab and then the ‘add’ button. enter ‘ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa’ in the dialogue box and then click ‘add source’.
the next step is to change the distro version from natty to maverick (if you leave it set on natty then a 404 error appears). select one of the wine apt urls at the bottom at the bottom of the list and click ‘edit’. change natty to maverick and select ok.
now reload the software sources and search for wine1.3. right click and choose ‘mark for installation’. click apply at the top and wine1.3 will replace wine1.2.
download the kindle for pc application from here once you’ve downloaded it mark the file as executable by right-clicking it, choosing permissions and ticking the ‘allow executing file as a program’ option. once you’ve done this the software can be installed in the usual way and started from ‘applications/wine/programs/amazon’ etc
